George C. Van Dusen III ’57

George C. Van Dusen III ’57 of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Scottsdale, Arizona, died on February 7. He came to Dartmouth from Millbrook Prep School in New York. While at Dartmouth George was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and participated in the Dartmouth Players. After a stint in the National Guard, he began a successful career in the life insurance industry. He worked first at Charles Sexton in Minneapolis, Minnesota, followed by Diversified Insurance Services in Richfield, Minnesota. In 1971 he established Diversified Brokerage Services, which provides life, annuity, long-term care and disability income products. He was an innovator, always on the cutting edge of his industry. He was a charter partner of LifeMark Partners and became chairman of the National Association for Independent Life Brokerage Agencies in 1994. He also served on the executive committee of the global Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development. George received several major awards for his contributions to the industry. He joined the Masonic Orders and the Zuhrah Shrine Temple and served on the board of a local settlement house. George was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved reading, golfing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Diane, children George “Chip” IV and Victoria, four grandchildren and a brother. Fraternity brother Bob Shirley ’57 wrote that he was “a little less street savvy than (some of his brothers), dressed better than we and seemed more genteel than your typical ‘Gam.’ ” Bob Burton ’57 added: “He was a neat guy in every respect.”
