Frank Howard West ’43

Frank Howard West ’43 died March 11. At Dartmouth he was a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa, on the freshman debating team, president of the Natural History Club and in the Navy V-12 program and the Outing Club. Frank was a premed major and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After completing Dartmouth’s two-year Medical School he returned to his home state of Pennsylvania and finished his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1945. He interned at the Naval Hospital in St. Albans, Vermont, and began specialty training in psychiatry at the Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Frank remained there until 1991, when he became semiretired with the title of honorary consultant. From 1951 to 1986 he was also a professor of mental health science at Hahnemann Medical College and 1965 to 1992 was a director of the family company, West Co. He has published articles on psychiatry in medical journals. He has also published articles in an ornithological journal and in the Rhododendron Society Bulletin, the result of his membership in the American Rhododendron Society and the Men’s Garden Club of the Delaware Valley. Frank was class agent in 1987 and 1989, on the reunion giving committee in 1988 and Medical School class secretary in 2008. Both of Frank’s brothers—Bill ’50 and Jim ’53—graduated from Dartmouth. Frank married Maxine Calvin, Elizabeth Martin and Margo Ingram, who survive with his seven children and several grandchildren.
