Frank “Kit” Nagle Carleton Jr. ’57
Frank “Kit” Nagle Carleton Jr. ’57 died on October 16, 2009, after two strokes as he was recovering from carotid artery surgery and other physical ailments at St. Mary Medical Center in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Kit attended Winchester (Massachusetts) High School, where he was an avid football and basketball player. While at Dartmouth he majored in economics, was president of Phi Gamma Delta, a member of the Interfraternity Council and participated in football, the Newman Club and Winter Carnival. Kit served in the U.S. Marines and then began a career in sales that spanned 48 years supporting the commercial hardware and flooring industries. In 1970 he was appointed vice president of York Production Engineering Co. Inc., where he also served as a director. Kit participated in Common Cause and was a member of the York (Pennsylvania) Suburban school board. In more recent years he could be seen demonstrating for peace or having coffee with friends in downtown Doylestown. Family and friends were most important to Kit. He is survived by children Elizabeth, Ann and David; grandchildren Jorge, Caroline, Gabrielle, Alessandra and Sarah; and siblings Bill ’56, Rick ’71, Sheila and Jane. His father, Frank Carleton ’32, and uncle Dean Carleton ’41 were also Dartmouth graduates. Kit’s sister Sheila wrote to fraternity brother Charlie Sellman ’57: “For me Kit was bigger than life, and I miss him so. I know love and friendship never die.” Charlie remembers Kit as “a real neat guy and good friend.”
