Ely C. Wagshul ’52

Ely C. Wagshul ’52, M.D., died peacefully in hospice on May 25 in West Palm Beach, Florida, surrounded by family. Cause of death was related to complications from Parkinson’s disease. Ely was born to Russian immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York, on March 16, 1931. He prepared for college at Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn, where he was class president both junior and senior years. He attended Dartmouth for three years and was a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club. For his senior year, to start medical training, he transferred to and then graduated from Tufts University and Tufts Medical School in 1955. He served an internship for a year in Detroit, followed by residencies in Boston and New York City. He then served two years in the U.S. Navy as a medical officer in Charleston, South Carolina. Following service he settled in Meriden, Connecticut, where he was a founding partner in Urology Associates and a much-respected and well-loved member of the immediate and larger southern Connecticut medical community, the Jewish community, the Masons, the Veterans Administration and the Farms Country Club. Ely maintained strong ties to his Dartmouth classmates and he was a frequent attendee at Dartmouth events. He much enjoyed both golf and skiing. He is survived by his wife, Sondra “Sandy,” whom he met while on a golfing vacation in 1959. He is survived by his children Beth ’83, Jonathan, Karen and Andrew; five grandchildren; and younger brother Herman “Beck.”
