Donald P. Rider ’51

Donald P. Rider ’51 died on October 3, 2011, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, two children and five grandchildren. Don retired to Florida from Connecticut in 1993 after a 37-year career in banking. In Florida he delighted in playing golf; he and Sue frequently played as a couple and he had two holes-in-one at Sawgrass Country Club. Nearby family (his late father, Harold E. Rider ’25, had also been a Floridian), music and involvement in his church’s bible study and fine arts programs gave him special pleasure. Don came to Dartmouth from Hartford, Connecticut, after attending the Taft School. He was a member of Green Key and Theta Delta Chi and manager of the hockey team. Following graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for five years as a fighter pilot. He stayed in close touch with his squadron mates throughout his life, attending squadron reunions and regularly visiting the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in Pooler, Georgia.
