Donald McCorkindale ’43

Donald McCorkindale ’43 died March 12 at the Liberty Common Nursing Home in North Chatham, Massachusetts. Don grew up in Holyoke, Massachusetts, graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1939 and Dartmouth in December 1942, and attended Tuck School in his senior year. At Dartmouth Don was a member of C&G, the Glee Club and Phi Kappa Psi and participated in intramural athletics. He majored in psychology. After graduation Don served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. After the war he joined Chase and Coolidge Co., a family business, established in 1878 and located in Holyoke. He eventually became owner and president of this industrial supply firm, which served the mills and contractors in western Massachusetts. Don married Louise Friedrich in 1950. In 1993, when Don retired, he and Louise moved to Chatham, where they were both active in community affairs, the First Congregational Church and the Lower Outreach Council. Don was also busy with golf, swimming, long walks, reading and enjoying his many friends. Involved in Dartmouth affairs, Don served on the reunion committee, 1998; as a class agent, 1985-86 and 1988-2002; and as a leadership agent, 2001-02. Don’s wife, Louise, died in 2010. He is survived by children David and Rosamond, two grandchildren, three sisters and many nieces and nephews.
