David Keith Martin ’54
David Keith Martin ’54 passed away on February 19 in Arlington, Virginia. David came to Dartmouth from Kearney, Nebraska. He graduated from the Shattuck School. At Dartmouth he was an English major; a member of the Undergraduate Council, Green Key and the Dartmouth Christian Union; and served as president of the Dartmouth Players (portraying the evil captain in Mr. Roberts and a pompous psychiatrist in Harvey). After graduation he obtained a master’s from the Columbia School of Journalism and studied for his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado. David’s career was divided between journalism (focusing on politics), government public information, private-sector public relations and work on Capital Hill with both the Senate and House of Representatives. During his early career as a journalist he covered politics and elections for the Associated Press and Omaha, Nebraska, radio and television. David was a campaign finance and lobby reporter for the Roll Call Report syndicate and news editor and book review editor for the Rocky Mountain News. He spent the final years of his career as a senior press officer for the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency. After his retirement David was invited to be a foreign election observer. Between 2004 and 2006 he went on two missions to Serbia, three missions to Azerbaijan and two missions to the Ukraine during the Orange Revolution. David was a member of the Denver Press Club, the National Press Club and the Cosmos Club of Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife, Crista, and daughters Melanie and Mollie.
