David C. Angell ’51
David C. Angell ’51, M.D., died in his hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on May 21, 2013. He loved the out-of-doors. His idea of a perfect day included hiking, biking, running, swimming, skiing, canoeing, rafting, bird-watching—activities that combined his passions for nature, fitness and adventure. He and his wife, Joan, shared many of these interests; they bicycled though each of the 251 towns in Vermont and enjoyed several strenuous bicycling trips in Europe. At Dartmouth he was an active member of the Outing Club and the Ledyard Canoe Club. He and his roommate Jim Asker ’51 canoed from Evanston, Illinois, to New Orleans as undergraduates. Dave also played trumpet in the Marching Band and was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa. His professional life was spent as an analytical and clinical pathologist at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, following receipt of his medical degree at McGill University and two years service in the U.S. Army. In addition to outdoor and fitness activities, Dave was active in tall grass prairie restoration efforts in Wisconsin and served on the boards of the Eau Claire YMCA and of his church. He was a lifelong learner, cherishing the excitement of trying new things. One of his legacies is the Indianhead Track Club in western Wisconsin, which he co-founded 45 years ago and led for many years. Besides his wife, David is survived by three children and three grandchildren. His father, Wilmer Angell, M.D., was a member of Dartmouth’s class of 1922.
