Colby Adams Cogswell ’39

Colby Adams Cogswell ’39 died November 11, 2009, in Orinda, California. At Dartmouth Colby was a member of Theta Chi and The Players and went on to Tuck School. He served as an officer in the Office of Strategic Services in Paris during WW II. He married Anne Jaquith in 1948. After five-year stints with Northern Trust and Chicago National Bank Colby made the courageous decision to leave banking and become an Episcopal minister in California. In 1960 he entered the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) in Berkeley, and after graduating three years later was assigned as assistant rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Palo Alto. In 1966 Colby was called back to CDSP as assistant dean and chaplain. In 1969 he decided to return to banking while remaining committed to God’s service. Colby joined Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco and was appointed vice president of the trust department in 1977. He also became associate rector of St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley. He retired from the bank in 1983. Colby will be remembered for his focus on family, giving unselfishly of his time in helping others spiritually and financially, gift of listening, faith in God, business acumen, sense of humor, twinkling eyes and bright smile. He is survived by daughter Mary, son William and six grandchildren.
