Class Note 1972
Issue
November-December 2026
Class Note 1972. Dear ’72s, I spent 16 days in Scotland with family and then a week at the Lake Mansfield Trout Club, so I was out of circulation.
I heard from Hans Stumm that he returned from a trip to Paris and Ireland with his grandson and then went to South Bend, Indiana, for a family reunion.
I will be going to the 75th anniversary of the rugby club in mid-September and to Homecoming on October 3. I look forward to catching up with some classmates.
Sandy Rosner, a ’73 who graduated with us, asked me to put him in touch with Grover Baxley. I contacted Grover about Sandy’s request and learned that Grover’s second granddaughter will be attending the University of Virginia.
I regret to report the passing of four classmates.
The Rev. Charles Jefferson Merrill died on July 24. Chuck was a father, professor, and, for the past 13 years, a Roman Catholic priest in Birmingham, Alabama.
James O. Kuhl passed away on January 5. Sadly, I don’t have any further information about James.
Brian E. Williams died on April 5. Brian played hockey and was co-captain of the tennis team with Wade Judge. Brian received an M.B.A. from Northwestern and had a successful business career in the Chicago metro area. Brian leaves his spouse, Barbara, and three children.
James Long Hale died on June 22. “Kip” came to Dartmouth from Philips Exeter Academy and became a financial consultant, golf player, and author. He received a J.D. from Syracuse and was a member of the Flying Club and on the ski patrol. Kip’s daughter, Sarah, is a member of the class of ’00.
As Bill Roberts, our esteemed newsletter editor, is fond of quoting President John Sloan Dickey: “There is no parting in the Dartmouth fellowship.” As I like to paraphrase some words of our alma mater: “The hill winds know their names.”
