Issue
March-April 2025
Happy spring, ’99s!
I hope 2025 is off to a good start for you all. We have lots of news to share.
First, Kristen Chartier recently got engaged to Sean Reilly, son Charlie’s basketball coach. Kristen writes: “Sean noticed my Dartmouth T-shirt during a game and commented to Charlie that his mom must be smart. Legend has it that Charlie replied, ‘She’s single too.’ ” Kristen adds that it’s unclear if Charlie won that season’s MVP trophy for his skills at basketball or playing Cupid, but Dartmouth clearly played a role as well. Congratulations, Kristen and Sean!
Meg Cashion Lysy writes that she and husband David Lysy live in Lyme, New Hampshire. Meg gets to interact with Dartmouth friends all the time because she works in alumni relations, running the alumni interviewing program. Meg and Dave have twins in seventh grade and recently adopted a second Newfoundland! Her name is Tawnee Frogmouth and she is a giant brown Newfie. Meg reunited with Mel Watts several years ago when Mel and her family moved to the Upper Valley from Bhutan.
Finally, if you’re a fan of crime stories, you might take a look at Christopher Rae’s latest work. He and fellow academic Bruce Rusk translated More Swindles from the Late Ming Dynasty by 17th-century Chinese writer Zhang Yingyu. This is the companion book to The Book of Swindles, published in 2017, and completes translation of Yingyu’s work into English. Storiescoming to life include cunning soothsayers spurring on a plot to overthrow the emperor andsilver counterfeiters wreaking havoc for traveling merchants—as well as stories of sorcery, sex,and violence. Their book was published by Columbia University Press in November 2024.
That’s all the news for now. I hope you enjoy the warming weather and look forward to sharing more news with you soon!
