Class Note 1995
Issue
January-February 2025
So, I’m on a quest to track down the ’95 empty-nesters to hear what your lives are like these days. I was inspired by Greg Hoffmeister ’93, who, with his wife, Michelle, has opened a beachside taproom in a neighboring town, Hull, Massachusetts, now that they are (mostly) empty-nesters. Check out Doctor’s Island if you’re in the area (but not until the weather warms up, they close for the winter!) My husband, Dan, and I have two high-schoolers and are definitely curious about life after carpools and softball games. It’s great to hear how some of our classmates are marking this new chapter.
Newlywed Matthew Riley’s son recently turned 21 and moved out last summer. “My husband and I are enjoying the empty-nest life! We just got back from our honeymoon in Spain, Morocco, and Gibraltar. We are exploring all of the speakeasies, cocktail bars, and taphouses in the Portland, Oregon, metro area. Also, we are looking to live out our midcentury fantasy and deciding whether to ‘love it’ or ‘list it’ with our current house.”
Jamie Moyer writes,“In September I took my youngest to college, left my job, and am pivoting my focus to a new direction that has been calling me for a while—the nonprofit sector. I’ve kicked off this journey by taking classes toward a certificate in nonprofit management from the Harvard Kennedy School, including a class with professor Arthur Brooks (author of From Strength to Strength), which has been very inspiring as I start this next chapter!”
Elizabeth Truong, aka Thahn, sent a stunning photo on a sailboat and reports: “My husband, Dan Garcia-Diaz, and I have managed to raise a sensible son (25) and charismatic daughter (22) who are both very busy with their own lives. Meanwhile, I’m racing in sailing regattas twice a week and Dan plays golf with his buddies. While we have separate hobbies, it’s fun to compare notes once we come together for a nice, quiet evening sans afterschool activities. Still, we miss those mischievous kids with all our hearts!”
Another ’95 couple Becky (Gayman) Wiese and Brian Wiese have been empty-nesters for a year. “Our poor dog is suffering under the weight of too much added attention. We’re learning to mountain bike (with comical results), still attending our kids’ college soccer matches, and trying to visit some Dartmouth classmates. We celebrated our 50th birthdays in London with Chris Mitchell, Ali Ruff Mitchell, and Blaine Legere last summer and in Hawaii with Dana Brenner Costello and Jenn Chapman Schindler.
Becky’s also spending some of her free time helping out with our upcoming 30th reunion! We’ll gather in Hanover June 19-22. For early registration and more details, check out our class website at 1995.dartmouth.org. Hope to see you back on campus this summer.
Keep your news coming!
