Class Note 1986

Issue

November-December 2024

It’s so nice to have classmates reach out with news! I heard from Ned Groves, who retired from Memorial Sloan Kettering July 2023 as chief administrative officer running its clinical operations since 2015. Prior to that he was the administrative director for Mayo Clinic Cancer Services in Rochester, Minnesota. He and his wife, Deb Rhodes, built a house in Madison, Connecticut, about five years ago and love living in Madison near the water. After retiring from the Mayo Clinic as a physician in 2019, Deb joined Yale University as its chief quality officer and associate dean of the medical school. They have daughters Caroline, who graduated from Cornell in 2020 and lives in New York City and works for New York University, and Kate, who graduated from the University of Vermont in 2024 and lives in Arlington, Virginia, and is getting her master’s in biosecurity.

Now that he is retired, Ned can spend more time with classmates and friends and was able to catch up recently with John Hueston in New York City. Ned writes that John has not only created one of the top law firms in the country during the past 10 years, Hueston Hennigan, but also just received the “Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession” honor at the 2024 Chambers USA Awards. Chambers is the leading U.S. and global legal ranking agency; the award is typically given to one attorney nationally each year. In giving the award to John, Chambers described him as “one of the nation’s leading trial lawyers” who cofounded Hueston Hennigan and built the firm into “one of the nation’s leading choices for bet-the-company litigation.” In 2021, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and inspired by the legacy of Thurgood Marshall, John and his firm founded the Social Justice Legal Foundation, a public interest nonprofit dedicated to bringing impactful and innovative public interest trial litigation and training and developing the next generation of civil rights lawyers to be fearless in their pursuit of justice. Give an ’86 rouse for John!

Scott Sandell is living in Palm Beach, Florida, and is working in venture capital for New Enterprise Associates as a managing general partner.

I received a wonderful letter in the mail from Quentin Kopp ’49. He informed me that his son, Shepard S. Kopp II, Esq., is practicing criminal law defense from his law office in Santa Monica, California. Shep’s living in Los Angeles with wife Liza Ryan ’87, a renowned photographic artist, and enjoys playing golf weekly, cycling, and likes to surf a bit. An interesting tidbit that I learned is that Shep’s father officiated the wedding of Krista Thomas Corr many years ago.

Please continue to send me your news. I love it when my inbox provides me with great information to share with all of you! We are looking forward to hearing what’s new in your life!
