Class Note 1986
Issue
July-August 2024
Mary Frances Spatola Sabo writes that last September she retired from serving as an attorney to New York State after almost 24 years. Most of her experience was in the field of health insurance, where she ran programs to cover the uninsured and helped implement the Affordable Care Act. In November she was elected to the town board of North Greenbush, a small town in upstate New York. She really loves politics and serving her community, so she is very happy. She has three children who are pretty much out of the nest so it’s just her and her husband and their pets. She is looking forward to seeing Brian Moore and Richard Thorner for dinner in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the next few months.
Jayne Daigle Jones and husband Vernon are living in Piermont, New Hampshire. Jayne is an elementary special education teacher in Corinth, Vermont. Jayne and Vernon have six children, ranging in age from 33 to 22. It was an exciting day when their youngest graduated from college! On the other side of the country are Doug Keare and his wife, Jill Morgan ’85, who are residing outside of Stanford, California. Doug is working for a medical device startup company that helps people with the early detection of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Almost 30 years after it opened, the Jonathan Belden Daniels ’86 Climbing Gym at the College continues to draw students, faculty, and staff who want to practice their skills at the 23-foot-tall bouldering facility in the basement of Maxwell Hall. It’s a place where students can learn safe climbing techniques and stretch themselves physically and in other ways. It’s very special to see our classmate honored in this manner.
Dr. David Linehan began a new era as he stepped into his role as CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center and dean of the school of medicine and dentistry and senior vice president for health sciences following a nine-year tenure as chair of the department of surgery.
Christine Hellauer and Susanne Pepper recently reacted to the DAM cover story about Mario Cohn-Haft ’83 as the “Bird Listener” (March/April issue). Mario was one of their freshman trip leaders and they fondly remember his amazing gift of recognizing and voicing a wide range of bird calls. His influence helped make their freshman trip stand out as one of their most cherished memories from Dartmouth and they speak fondly of their experience with Susanne’s son, Zane, and Christine’s sons, Jeremy, Spencer, and Macklin. Christine is living in Rockville, Maryland, and Susanne lives in Sunnyvale, California.
Unfortunately, I have some sad news to report on several classmates. Andrew “Andy” Gora died of congestive heart failure in his hometown of Toms River, New Jersey, on March 15; and Kathryn A. Miller passed away on March 17 in San Francisco.
Please continue to send me your news. We look forward to hearing what’s new in your life!
