Class Note 1985

Issue

March-April 2023

’Twas the night before deadline and all through the house, no news from classmates, not even a spouse.

The iPhone was charged with meticulous care, in the hopes that a text, a tweet, or anything was there.

Football on TV with more games ahead, I had visions of Instagram posts in my head.

A fire ablaze and gifts on our lap. The dearth of news called for yet another nap.

When suddenly in the kitchen arose a loud ping, I sprang from the couch—news must be coming.

But alas, of news there was nothing more, just another Amazon delivery by the back door.

Opened the laptop to check my email. Surely someone wrote with news to regale.

Maybe LinkedIn had some informative posts, but all I saw were general greetings and cocktail toasts.

Holidays were here with a wealth of movie classics. To get some news, I had to resort to old tricks.

Why not call out some names in the hope of reply? Surely this was worth the old college try.

Now Lashar, now Dautcher, now Duster and Icken,on Kotto, on Rubin, on Connor and Miksen!

To your tablets and phones, to text or call. Send news, send news, send news all!

In choosing these names, many to pick. Of course, the holidays hearken to St. Nick.

All Nicks send updates, yeah, that’s it. But the only ’85 with that name is Nik Nesbitt.

A new year approaches and it’s special indeed. Many thanks for your indulgence and taking time to read.

Yes, this poem does have an end in sight. Happy 2023 all and, if you can, please write!

Hoping to hear from our class reindeer Dave Lashar, Jay Dautcher, Michelle Duster, Laura Icken, Natascha Kotto, Jon Rubin, Chip Conner and Troy Miksen.Should be a great year really to hear from anyone as our 60th birthdays approach and, in some cases, have occurred. If 40 was “lordy, lordy…” and 50 was “nifty,” surely 60 has to be even better. Make 2023 the year to send in a quick update about how you’re doing and what you did to celebrate your 60th. I did hear randomly that Harry Bourque does an incredible impersonation of Mick Jagger, so perhaps Harry is available for your special gathering to provide some “Satisfaction”!

Sadly, I am also sharing the news of the passing of our classmate, Rebecca Hartley, who passed away from cancer in October 2022. Rebecca is survived by her spouse, Paul Ammann ’83, and son Matthew. At Dartmouth Rebecca was a government major and a member of the women’s crew team. She spent many years in the northern Virginia area after receiving both an M.A. (1998) and a J.D. (1994) from the University of Virginia.
