Class Note 1985
Issue
January-February 2023
Last year brought significant milestones for Dartmouth. The trustees elected our first female president, Sian Beilock, who arrives on campus in June and the anticipation is palpable! We are truly fortunate to have landed her as our 19th president.
In 2022 Dartmouth honored 50 years of coeducation. I feel immense gratitude to have earned my A.B. at Dartmouth because of that landmark decision. Most importantly, I met incredible women who remain my closest friends 40 years later. Marcy Sitnik Reed, Eleni Daskalakis Henkel, Kathy Reilly Gross, and I spent a hilariously fun and memorable weekend in Nashville in October, celebrating and honoring the first of us to reach that milestone birthday we are all beginning to roll into (you know the one I’m talking about).
David Lenrow shared news of a similarly fun “classic Dartmouth wilderness bonding” trip with buddies Doug Williamson, Dave Weld, and Peter Jordan to the Adirondack Mountain Reserve in upstate New York. The guys stayed at the historic Ausable Club and then camped at Upper Ausable Lake. David also enjoyed time with his kids and nephew (plus adorable rescue dog Sami) staying at a Dartmouth cabin in the Second College Grant. He writes, “I have totally underutilized this privileged Dartmouth resource. It was sublime and I’ll be looking for a chance to return.” Superb reminder of all that Dartmouth continues to offer to us as alumni.
Laura Icken’sson, Wes, will have an opportunity to take advantage of the Grant and other Dartmouth Outing Club resources as a member of class of 2026. Congratulations to Wes (and kudos to mom Laura)! Laura lives and practices law in L.A. and volunteers on the board of the Dartmouth Club of L.A.
Co-secretary John MacManus passed on some updates from Ron Den Broeder about classmates from various corners of the country. In the Northeast, Mark Halliday is an executive producer of interactive media and video in the banking industry, living in Arlington, Massachusetts. On the side he renovates and flips homes and recently restored a VW Westfalia for camping trips, “getting in touch with his inner hippie,” according to Ron.
Noel Danforth, also in the Boston area, has 25 years managing her own independent graphic design firm and her passion remains painting. In the Southwest, Ron is in touch with Anne Goodwin Sides, who, with her husband, Hampton, “lives at the top of the Santa Fe [New Mexico] foothills on the edge of deep wilderness. We can walk out the door and immediately set off on a network of amazing hiking and mountain biking trails that are pristine backcountry ski trails in the winter.”
Anne spent time last fall with Sarah Rahr Fortna and her husband, Ben, at their cabin in the mountains of eastern Arizona. Anne also shared news of Sally Schwartz in Chicago. For more than nine years Sally has brought her signature humor to her work as a syndicated columnist for The Chicago Tribune, with her brilliant tagline: “Everyone thinks it. I write it.” Keep the news coming. We appreciate hearing from you!
