Class Note 1975

Issue

November-December 2024

From now until next June I will be reminding all of us that our 50th reunion is coming up on June 13-15, 2025. I am not certain we all need reminding but perhaps some of us are getting a tad forgetful. I know that I am returning things to the wrong drawer in the kitchen periodically. Let’s hope it does not progress beyond that!

One of the recentissues of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine included several articles about Dartmouth authors. The 1975 Class Notes included a few references to our very own classmates who number among them. This prompted an incoming missive from Chris Carlson, who also happens to be a writer. He lives in Los Angeles and indicated, “My current projects include Little Island of Joy, an historical screenplay inspired by true events surrounding a secret love affair between Helen Keller and Peter Fagan. I also wrote a play of the same title.” Apparently, screenplays are his thing, and he has written another inspired by author Bonnie McEneaney’s book about the events leading up to 9/11 through the lens of three men working at Cantor Fitzgerald on the 105th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York.

Al Markman was kind enough to reach out and make sure that we did not sustain any damage from Hurricane Debby. Thankfully the answer was no, but Al sustained some minor property damage at his house in the outback of Minnesota, when a very rare tornado took out a great number of trees. He and Wendy were unscathed and look forward to coming down south to Florida later in the year.

Michael Hoover and I had a nice exchange discussing the various current activities of our classmates. As a result, we discovered that we are all engaged in some interesting endeavors. Among them are teaching English to immigrants, pro bono legal work for families in need, family financial advisory, volunteering at the local animal shelter and helping small businesses navigate bureaucratic red tape. Many have taken the skills they learned and practiced during long careers and are now applying them in new, varied, and productive ways.

Perhaps you can send me a note about how you are spending your time and devoting your talents these days—could be a great lead up to the reunion.
