Class Note 1972
Issue
November-December 2024
Dear ’72s, I saw Wayne Young in his law office. I daresay that Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse would not exist without Wayne. No one I know has done more for Dartmouth rugby, football, and baseball than Wayne. Peter Broberg injured his right hand trying to break up a dog fight. It’s a good thing that didn’t happen to our star pitcher in the 1970s. Merrily Gerrish retired from banking law practice and traveled to Paris. Lawrie Lieberman sent a copy of his book, Listening to America, which is about a hypothetical cross-country camping trip in which Lawrie holds small-group discussions on wide-ranging topics. Chuck Leer’s son, Will, could be seen on NBC’s Olympic broadcast, and Jack Manning kept me posted on Dartmouth athletes in Paris. I missed Tom Wilkins at the Trout Club. John D. Voelker wrote, “Trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or impressed by power but respond to humility and endless patience.” I ran into Dr. Bob Arnot who received his B.S. from Dartmouth in 1972. Arnot was the physician for the U.S. ski team during the 1980 Winter Olympics and has been an author and a medical and foreign correspondent for NBC and CBS. Demetry and Valerie Papadopoulis joined me at the Trout Club for several days. Demetry relayed his granddaughter’s excitement on the discovery that her good friend and swimming buddy is the granddaughter of Dr. John Garnett, a former swimmer. Demetry also talked about traveling to Boston with Mike Huft, Jack Brooks, Kirk Andrus, Dan Hergott, expecting to stay with their dates. When the lodging didn’t materialize, they followed a policeman’s directions to a local jail, where they were put up for the night. Demetry and Kirk shared a cell and Mike and Dan shared a cell. Jack shared a cell with an inmate. The “facility” provided coffee and donuts in the morning before letting them go. That reminds me of a time I was in a N.Y.C. taxi going to Randall’s Island for a rugby match and the driver took me to Rikers Island. I told the cabbie that my striped shirt and numerals weren’t prison garb. Demetry recently heard from Gary Dicovitsky and Gary Shanley, who were traveling together on a cruise with wives Laura and Ginny. Demetry expects to see Jack Vayda in Maine. They have the still north in their soul.
