Class Note 1971
Issue
November-December 2024
Hard to believe it’s halfway through the summer with fall right around the corner. The big news is that our class has begun planning for our 55th reunion in June 2026 (where did the time go?) and has already sought advice from the class of ’69, which just completed its event. We have a good committee: cochairs Jim Rager and Tony FitzPatrick; treasurer and registration, Willis Newton; publicity and outreach, Jack Burnett; programming and events, Dave Brooks; bar and beverage, Kathy Duff Rines; catering and swags, TBD; theme, Alice Reno Malone and Ted Eismeier; and memorial service, Dan Close. If you are interested in being involved or have any suggestions from reunions you heard about or attended that left wonderful memories, please contact any of us.
Ted Eismeier, leader of the class of ’71 book discussion group, will host a book talk via Zoom with Elinor Lipman (widow of Robert Austin) on October 9 at 8 p.m.. “Elinor will speak briefly and perhaps read a bit from her book, Ms. Demeanor. But there will be lots of time for discussion about the book, her career, and her writing process.” Considering the theme, Ted hopes we have lots of women on the Zoom: “Invite your wife, husband, partner, or friend. Betsy and I just finished the book and think you will read it quickly and enjoy it.” After that Ted and Betsy will take a sabbatical for the 2024-25 academic year, returning in the fall of 2025 with a set of meetings geared to an important theme of our 2026 55th reunion—friendship.
Speaking of books, Charles Capanzano just published his first novel, Can a Psychologist Help Us Save Our World, in July. It is available on Amazon and Kindle. Charles reports that while not great literature serving no threats to Mark Twain et al., it does reference the protagonist’s Dartmouth experiences during 1967 to 1971.
Homecoming is scheduled for November 1 against Harvard. Our class has reserved the usual location in Blunt for our evening gatherings, ’tails, supper, and afterglow and we hope to see you there!
I regret to report we have received notice of the following classmates’ deaths. Obituaries will appear in the online edition of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine: Harold Y. McCullough October 23, 2023; Vance Howard Smith May 4; Matthew B. Carroll June 28; and Robert L. Kelcourse July 14.
