Class Note 1971
Issue
September-October 2024
John Hanley and Sam Cuddeback spent a mid-May day on campus visiting with staff members overseeing the various programs our class supports annually. In an exciting development, they met for the second time with Rachel Kent ’21, in the office of sustainability. Class of ’71 will be supporting a student leader in its program, and we hope to engage ’21s with class-matching support that will grow through time. Curt Welling also met with Sam and John to discuss his engagement with Tuck, Thayer, and shared entrepreneurship. John has had a new book published and Curt is enjoying life in his Upper Valley garden when he’s not teaching.
The Charlottesville, Virginia, reunion in May turned out to be a micro but successful mini event with a very engaged turnout of classmates—some we haven’t seen in a while. Ron Harris prepared a special lunch for us at his energy-efficient, geo-thermal home in Palmyra, Virginia, following our in-depth, multi-floor tour of Monticello, the grounds, and outbuildings. Ron proved to be an excellent cook and I was so pleased to finally meet him. Dave Aylward traveled from Washington, D.C., and Rich Crandall came up from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. John Hammerschmidt tried to attend from northern Virginia but at the last minute couldn’t be in two places at once. Willis Newton came from California to play golf and be immersed in all things Jefferson. Jim and Yola Rager flew in from Canada; Ted and Betsy Eismeier from Austin, Texas; and Jim and Alice Malone rounded out the group during three days. When two or three are gathered in her name….
As I write this column for the September/October issue of Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, I am preparing to watch the CNN presidential debate between Biden and Trump. The final words I will share with you are please vote—it’s the only way you can truly be involved in what happens!
