Class Note 1964

Issue

September-October 2024

As we write this our 60th-year Dartmouth reunion has just come to a close—hard to believe that it has been six decades since President Dickey and Dean Seymour handed us our degrees. Does anyone remember who the Commencement speaker was? Certainly, nobody with the fame of this year’s Roger Federer! For those who did not make it back to campus, we have gathered a few highlights for this column. Hunt Whitacre has given a fuller picture of our reunion on the class Facebook site. Kudos to him, co-president Roy Lewicki, and reunion chair Dave Hewitt for producing a fun time with many memorable events, including some stimulating classroom sessions. One interesting perspective from the reunion is the significant number of women holding the levers of power and authority at the College. In our day we had only a few women on campus and only one female faculty member. Now there are literally hundreds of female faculty. Another interesting part of the reunion was touring many new buildings. The new Thayer School engineering and computer science complex is awe-inspiring, especially the “shop” funded by gifts from our own Dick Couch. With all the versatility of this state-of-the-art lab and the computerized machine tools and software now available to Dartmouth students, the range of innovative work they can build is staggering. Nothing like this was even remotely available in our day. The presentation of the Outstanding Leadership Award went posthumously to our adopted classmate, President Jim Wright and accepted by his widow, Susan Wright. New class officers have taken over and considerations for a 65th reunion in September 2029 are on the minds of several. New officers include an innovative president’s council with Fritz Corrigan as president for 2024-25, followed by one-year stints from Bob Bartles, Chris Palmer, Harvey Tettlebaum, and Sandy McGinnes. Steve Ward continues as treasurer and Tom Seymour as co-newsletter editor along with Tim Brooks. Rob Goodman continues as co-secretary, joined by Hal Rabner. A feature of each semi-decadal reunion is the presentation of the class gift: $1.6 million to date—a new 60th reunion Dartmouth record for the “class by itself.” Since we last wrote the College has been notified of the deaths of classmates Wallace “Wally” R. Lord Jr., Thomas “Tom” L. Phillips, and Nelson “Nels” O. Carman Jr. Best regards.
