Class Note 1958
Issue
November-December 2024
Despite my plea two months ago for stuff, any stuff, that I could write about in DAM, the vacuum persists and I’m left grasping at straws for material that readers will find interesting. That last column created using ChatGPT produced resounding silence so while tempted to do that again, I will resist and fill my space with trivia!
A real piece of trivia is Coleman Colla’s periodic “Coleman’s Mental Meanderings: Random thoughts of an old guy in the middle of Los Angeles.” This is published on Substack and makes for amusing reading about stuff that is mostly of no great moment. Larry Hampton uses a different vehicle to spread travelogs of trips here and there, mostly on continental Europe. “Portugal Resident: Your daily news from Portugal” is Larry’s medium and that too appears randomly. However, his last communication featured a wine column written by Eric Asimov, the wine critic for The New York Times. That produced a reaction from Tryg Myhren, from whom I hear occasionally when the sun and moon are aligned and something juicy is happening in politics.
We did hear recently from another Denver denizen, Kit Cowperthwaite, lamenting his inability to travel in October to our fall mini-reunion. That weekend drew a nice number for a postreunion mini with those planning to attend, including Mary and Hal Bernsen, Nora and Frank Gould, Linda and John Trimble, Eleanor and Mike Simberkoff, Farrel and Mel Croner, Sam Silverstein, Don McCree, Carleen and Don McIntyre, Judy and Cack Bittner, Joel Einhorn, Judy and Doug Fusonie, Robin and Sam Smith, Nancy and Bob Downey, Betsy Jo and Jim Spence, and Scottie and Walter Vail. We chose the weekend of October 4-6 for that mini, during which the class meeting addressed bolstering support amongst the class for the Class of 1958 Scholarship Fund, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024. The fund is paired with two students this year, Amanda Adetula ’26 from Lagos, Nigeria, and Shade Hargis ’27 from Safford, Arizona. Deaths reported include John Kavanaugh, Richard Ray, Harold Douglas, and Malcolm Hibbard.
