Class Note 1956

Issue

January-February 2025

In response to my request, Jack Billhardt was kind enough to provide me with a copy of The Wall Street Journal containing the article titled “College Rankings.” I was interested in the standards used to rank Dartmouth at 57th. One of the most significant standards currently used is a measure of how well a college prepares a student for financial success. I did not find any mention of the importance of a liberal arts education. Did the members of our class enjoy the lifelong benefits of a liberal arts education while realizing a reasonably successful career? Send me your thoughts on this issue and I’ll share them with other classmates.

Lacking copy from classmates, I retrieved from my files a reference to a meeting my wife and I had with Charlie Morrissey some years ago at a restaurant in Greensboro, Vermont. The luncheon attendants included Keith Ladd. Charlie was his usual interesting person regaling us with his experience while living in Houston. A Princeton graduate I knew from graduate school left the restaurant before finishing his meal to participate in a tennis doubles match that included William Rehnquist, chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, who was a fine doubles player. I warn you that I will continue a report on the tennis game in question unless I receive copy from classmates to fill its place in the next edition. To increase the force of this threat I promise to explain the restrictive covenant that besmirched the real property owned by Rehnquist in Greensboro.

Finally, enjoy the Yuletime poem from Harry Nutting.

Snowflakes and sleigh bells all thru the night.

Christmas Day.

Christmas cookies and candy. Christmas delight.

who’s come to stay.

Children’s presents, opening fun.

The dog’s outside, having a run.

snow.

Snowman tomorrow, a family rite.

every day.

Word of the day: ort (usually “orts”), a scrap or remainder of food from a meal. Should we recognize that orts will be in short supply as their source of creation disappears?

With sadness I report the passing of Williard T. Carleton, Ph.D.
