Class Note 1956
Issue
July-August 2024
With reference to the picture of the crew in the recent class newsletter, Ruth (Becker) McRobbie writes “I can identify one person in the lightweight crew—the second from the right is my late husband, Bob Becker. He loved crew and, along with his parents, I went to several races to support and cheer him on. One of his lifelong dreams was to own a one-man scull; unfortunately, that dream was never realized. He kept and treasured his crew shirt. When he died in 2001 Clem Malin and I scattered his ashes in the Connecticut River during the 45th reunion. Nobody rowed that reunion. I will never forget this wonderful tribute to him. Thanks for the memories.”
Kirby Fowler reports, “I have been retired since March 1995, some 29 years ago. During that time I spent a number of years as president of the Dartmouth Club of Princeton, also as an alumni ambassador for admission interviews and doing what I can as a class agent to encourage donations to the Alumni Fund.” He is proud to report that “his daughter, Kelly Hunter, and her husband, Andre Hunter, son Kirby Jr., grandsons Max and Cameron Hunter, Cameron’s fiancée, Olivia Holmes, and granddaughter Casey Hunter are all Dartmouth students.”
Word of the Day: Pococurante means an indifferent or unconcerned person. This is an appropriate description for most members of our class who are yet to provide grist for this mill. When writing for publication in this column, please be guided by the following quotation from William Faulkner describing the writings of Ernest Hemingway: “He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary.”
With sadness, I report the passing of Herman K. Friedman and Robert “Bob” K. Barry.
