Charles Maurice Cahn Jr. ’43
Charles Maurice Cahn Jr. ’43 died February 10, 2014, at Roland Place in Baltimore. Charlie grew up in northwest Baltimore and graduated from the Friends School, where he was on the student council and school paper and active in the drama program. He also played football, basketball, lacrosse and tennis. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Lambda Phi. After graduating from Dartmouth in December 1942 Charlie served as an artillery instructor in the Army. At the end of World War II he attended Harvard Law School, receiving his degree in 1950. After serving in the Korean War Charlie began his legal career in Baltimore with Blades & Rosenfeld, specializing in estates and trusts. His fellow lawyers described him as “the rock of reliability,” and said, “clients loved him” and “he was so jovial he made the office a warm and comfortable place to work.” He continued to practice law until 2009. Charlie served on the Maryland Bar Association’s estate and trust section and the attorneys grievance commission, was instrumental in drafting state law relating to taxation and disposition of joint accounts, and served as an officer and director of the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, president of the Jewish Family and Children’s Services as well as president of the Health and Welfare Council. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, the former Elinor Bonwit, and children Charles III, James and Deborah and their families, including five grandchildren.
