Charles Mahoney Donovan ’43

Charles Mahoney Donovan ’43 died August 30, 2014. Charles was raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and graduated from Exeter, where he was on the school handbook committee and debating team and played baseball. At Dartmouth he majored in English, was on the Interdormitory Council and a member of the Freshman Glee Club and Phi Gamma Delta. During the war he was an instrument flight instructor in the Navy. In 1946 he became an English instructor at the Hill School, where he was also the cross-country and track coach. He spent six summers earning an M.A. in English at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1953 he left academia and within a few years became vice president of Berman Leasing. He later started his own company and for 40 years was the principal of Charles Donovan Associates, which provided transportation and logistics consulting services to corporations such as 3M and Phelps Dodge. He served on many corporate boards and was often quoted in Barrons, The Wall Street Journal and various trade magazines. He was also a board member of the Potsdam Memorial Medical Center. Always involved with Dartmouth, Charles was class newsletter editor for 16 years as well as class president, secretary and member of the executive committee. He received the Dartmouth Alumni Award in 1980. Charles was predeceased by his wife, the former Ruth Bragdon Hall, whom he married in 1946. He is survived by children Michael and Mary ’74 and three grandchildren.
