Carl Thurston Tourtellot ’45

Carl Thurston Tourtellot ’45 died December 10, 2010. “Turt” lived recently in Greenville, South Carolina. He came to Dartmouth from Winchester, Massachusetts, and Kimball Union Academy. He was a fighter pilot with the 4th Air Force from 1943 to 1945 and returned to Hanover to graduate in June of 1947. During that time he was president of the Interfraternity Council from Kappa Sigma. He went with Gulf Oil in foreign marketing, met and married Gertrude “Trude” Beiswenger and then attended night school for an M.A. in economics at University of Pittsburgh. He graduated in 1954 from Harvard Business School. He then went with Scott Paper for 10 years, four more with D.J. Alexander Corp. in building products, and in consulting with Ernst & Ernst. Through the years he was involved with many industries, including oil, paper, metals, consulting, rope, executive search, non-wovens and business brokerage. He said he even worked up to become a vice president of a stock exchange company. He was active with various Dartmouth clubs in interviewing, on boards of governors and as vice president and program chairman. He and his family spent many summers on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. He is survived by Trude, son Peter and daughter Margaret.
