Budd Wilson Schulberg ’36 died August 5, 2009, at his home on Long Island. At Dartmouth he majored in sociology and was a member of Pi Lamda Phi, Sphinx, Palaeopitus, Green Key and Junto. As editor-in-chief of The Dartmouth and associate editor of Jack-O-Lantern his penchant for writing was well-known. Budd became a writer in the Hollywood film industry and also wrote short stories for a number of national magazines. In 1941 his first novel, What Makes Sammy Run, was published, launching him upon a career replete with accomplishments and honors. In 1947 The Harder They Fall was published, later becoming a movie starring Humphrey Bogart. Then followed the novels The Disenchanted (1950) and On the Waterfront (1955), which as a film won nine Academy Awards. Budd retained a lively interest in alumni affairs. Survivors include his wife, Betsy Anne; their children Benn and Jessica; children of two previous marriages, Victoria, Stephen ’68 and David; and grandchildren.
