Barrant H. Sweet ’57

Barrant H. Sweet ’57 died peacefully on December 2, 2011, at his home in Goshen, Connecticut. He had come to Hanover from Closter, New Jersey. While at Dartmouth he majored in English and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army, where he served as an agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps until late 1960. Most of Barry’s working life was spent in educational sales for Scott, Foresman & Co. and McGraw-Hill and Co. in New England. His favorite pastimes were fishing and boating. He particularly liked fly fishing with friends in northern Maine and elsewhere in New England. Barry was active in the Boy Scouts. As a youth he had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and much later became a summertime Scoutmaster in Goshen. His activities also included the Goshen Land Trust, Goshen Community Care and Hospice, Litchfield Artillery, Literacy Volunteers and church outreach at a local soup kitchen. Barry retired in 2003 and had planned to travel with his wife, Lorraine. Unfortunately, in 2002 she developed progressive dementia and soon required constant care. She passed away in July 2006 after 48 years of marriage. Barry is survived by daughters Catherine and Meg, son Matthew and three grandchildren. He was known for his quick wit and love of family and friends.
