Andrew Melville Stewart ’52

Andrew Melville Stewart ’52 passed away on November 7, 2009. He was born June 9, 1929, in Minnesota. He grew up in Hanover, attended Vermont Academy and entered Dartmouth, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi and Sphinx. He majored in sociology. After graduating from Dartmouth Andy was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a naval gunfire spotter. Upon returning home he graduated from medical school at the University of Vermont. His gentle demeanor led to a pediatric residency at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover. In 1964 Andy and his wife, Ellie, relocated to Massachusetts, where he established a pediatric practice in Amherst. In 1977 he sold his practice and joined the U.S. Air Force to follow his passion for adventure. After living in Europe in 1983 the Stewarts returned to New Hampshire, where they made their home in Rye for the next 26 years. Ever the scientist, Andy was a docent at the Seacoast Science Center. Through his life Andy was an avid birder, skier and artist. Andy was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Ellie, who passed away in May of 2009. He is also survived by children James; Zoe; Sally and her husband, Tom; and Andrew and his wife, Brenda; granddaughters Willa and Elaine; and siblings Colin, Jake, Mary and Janet.
