Andrew Jennings Waring ’41
Andrew Jennings Waring ’41 died on Sept. 13, 2009 at his home in Advance, North Carolina. “Jack” was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. At Dartmouth he was a member of the Glee Club and Outing Club. He was denied military participation because of shoulder injuries from athletics, but as an industrial engineer with Firestone he was involved in making products for the World War II effort and supplemented his work by joining the Coast Guard Auxiliary, patrolling inland waterways. Jack’s subsequent career as an industrial engineer was devoted to the Hunt Manufacturing Co., a Philadelphia corporation that he served, since 1957, in Statesville, North Carolina, where he was involved in negotiating with labor unions and government agencies. In 1983 he retired, having served Hunt as vice president of human relations and personnel services. Jack was active in civic affairs and politics. He was a member of the North Carolina Employment Security Commission and chair of the board of trustees of the local community college and in 1967 was voted “Man of the Year” by the Statesville Chamber of Commerce. He married Penelope Gillespie in 1946. She survives him along with daughter Roslyn, three granddaughters and brother Edward.
