Allan Myers Hirshberg ’43

Allan Myers Hirshberg ’43 died December 10, 2012. Al lived in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Milford Prep, where he was on the student council, school paper and yearbook. He also played basketball and tennis. At Dartmouth Al majored in “topical II,” played football and was a member of Theta Delta Chi. After graduation he joined the Navy and was awarded the Navy Cross for “outstanding courage and inspirational leadership.” On May 4, 1945, Al, a Navy lieutenant, was in command of a USS landing ship during the assault on the Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa, when his ship was hit by a suicide bomber. It was necessary to abandon ship, but Al remained to supervise continuous fire from anti-aircraft batteries. The award was made on September 20, 1945. After the war Al worked for Levine TV Hardware Inc., where he became president and sole proprietor. Al’s first wife, Deanne, predeceased him. He is survived by his second wife, Janet, and his children Sally, Ellen and Larry.
