Alan Marshall Elkins ’52

Alan Marshall Elkins ’52, Tu’53, M.D., passed away on June 9, 2005, the College recently learned from his friend and Tuck professor Sydney Finkelstein and his wife, Gloria. Alan came to Dartmouth from his home in Brighton, Massachusetts, after graduating from Boston English High School. He was a Tuck major and a member of Pi Lambda Phi and Green Key. He also served as manager for the track and hockey teams and served on the Undergraduate Council, representing the Athletic Council. He did not initially complete his Tuck program, but moved on to receive his M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine in 1957. Many years later he completed his Tuck degree requirements. Alan served in the U.S. Army Medical Reserve from 1956 to 1965. His career in medicine was as a psychiatrist, first at St. Luke’s Hospital Center in New York City, then as professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont and, finally, for most of his career in Maine. He became chief of psychiatry at Maine Medical Center in Portland in 1980. In 1988 President Ronald Reagan nominated Alan to serve a five-year term as a member of the board of regents of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Alan later became corporate medical director of Magellan Health Services Inc. in Portland. His wife, Paula, survives him at their long-time home in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
