Alan M. Welty Jr. ’56

Alan M. Welty Jr. ’56 of North Haledon, New Jersey, died peacefully July 19 at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, surrounded by members of his family. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 54 years, Carlota “Teakie”; daughter Carolyn; daughter Janice and her husband, Andrew; son Alan III and his wife, Lori; grandchildren Sarah, Alan, Charlotte, Morgan, Mikayla and Madison; and brother Richard. Alan led a rich life. He grew up in Larchmont, New York, where he became an Eagle Scout and earned the Order of the Arrow. He graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1952 and at Dartmouth was a member of the Glee Club, the Injunaires and Kappa Kappa Kappa. Alan served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. Alan’s professional career spanned several decades, working first for Metropolitan Life in N.Y.C. and then Liggett & Myers/Liggett Group in Durham, North Carolina. The company moved to Mahwah, New Jersey, under the umbrella of Grand Met USA, where Alan served as director of reward systems, compensation and benefits until his retirement in 1988. For almost 50 years Alan was a member of the University Glee Club of N.Y.C., where he served on the board of directors for 12 years as secretary, treasurer, vice president, director-at-large and president (1995-97).
