Alan Hall ’47

Alan Hall ’47 died on August 22, 2015, at Hill House, Bath, Maine. He majored in English, sang in the Glee Club, played lacrosse, co-managed the soccer and ski teams and was elected to Cabin & Trail. He left to serve in the Navy and was discharged as a radioman third class after service on a destroyer tender and patrol craft PC-788 in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. He returned to Hanover in 1946, was a member of the Winter Sports Council, editor of Trail Blazer and graduated cum laude in 1949. He started teaching at Williston Academy in Easthampton, Massachusetts, where he also coached soccer and track. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania in 1951-52, earning an M.A. in English. In 1952 he joined the faculty at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he taught English and coached skiing, club soccer and lacrosse. During his tenure, he served as director of activities, director of studies and head of the seniors dormitory. He was a director of the Boys’ Club, president and treasurer of the N.H. Council for Better Schools, served on committees in the N.H. Department of Education and served as a troop committeeman for the Boy Scouts. As an alumnus, he edited the class newsletter from 1951 to 1955 and the class directory for several years and was co-editor of the 25th and 50th class reunion books. He served on the class executive committee, most recently as chairman of the memorial book program. He is survived by three sons.
