William J. Aylward Jr. ’41


William J. Aylward Jr. ’41 died in Lihue, Hawaii, on February 1. Born in 1918 in Fall River, Massachusetts, he graduated Dartmouth with a B.A., joining the Navy’s V-7 program while still in college. After graduation he served much of 1942 in the Pacific, engaging in the Battle of Guadalcanal. While in service he married Adele Martin in 1943. Their marriage of 63 years was blessed with children Lynn, Leslie and Bill III. Leaving naval active duty in 1945, Bill remained in the reserves as lieutenant commander until 1950. Returning to New Hampshire, he earned his graduate degree from Tuck in 1947 and then went to work in personnel and labor relations and management at several firms, U.S. Rubber, Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp., Gryodyne Co. of America and Harris Corp., eventually retiring in Indialantic, Florida. Following his wife’s death in 2006 Bill moved to Kauai, joining his oldest daughter there until his death. He is survived by his brother Paul, three children and three grandsons.
