Theodore F. Grant Jr. ’52


Theodore F. Grant Jr. ’52 died unexpectedly on July 10, 2010. Born in Barcelona, Spain, he graduated from White Plains (New York) High School. Ted left Dartmouth at the end of his junior year to enlist in the Army. While in the Army he trained in Mandarin Chinese and gained sufficient hours to receive his degree from the College. He returned to Hanover after military service for a year at Tuck School. He is quoted as saying at his 50th reunion, “Dartmouth formed me and I remember much of it with love.” After short stints in the business world Ted returned to school, receiving a master’s in psychology from the New School for Social Research (New York) and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina. He then embarked on a successful 40-year career, first with the Veterans Administration and then in private practice as a clinical psychologist in Maryland. He was active in psychology associations in the United States and Europe and was regarded as a valued mentor and an attentive listener. In recent years he devoted his energies to working with the department of aging in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, where he facilitated a group for caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s, as well as a group on developmental aging. Ted is survived by his wife, Deborah, also a psychologist, four children and three grandchildren.
