Stanley Charles Smoyer ’34

Stanley Charles Smoyer ’34 died at his home in Princeton, New Jersey, on December 15, 2010. He was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, graduated from Mercersburg in 1930, from Dartmouth Phi Beta Kappa in 1934 and Michigan Law School in 1937. After graduating he worked in his father’s and uncle’s law firm in Akron until moving to Washington, D.C., in 1942 to join the legal staff of the War Production Board. In 1946 Johnson & Johnson hired him as a member of its legal office. He was associate general counsel there at the time of his retirement in 1974. He married his first wife, Barbara, in 1940 and they had four children, two of whom predeceased them. Barbara died in 1996, and in 1997 Stan married Marjorie Read, the widow of his favorite first cousin. She survives him along with his children Nancy and David and numerous grand and great-grandchildren. Stan and Barbara were very prominent in Princeton for their many philanthropic endeavors from the moment they arrived in the city. Stan was a most distinguished and loyal Dartmouth man. He had been at one time president of his class, then president of the Alumni Council and he and Barbara contributed much to the improvement of the campus. Stan’s most recent contribution was to make possible the new, state-of-the-art soccer complex at the College.
