Issue

July - Aug 2010

Solomon Augustus Jacobson ’34 died on February 17, leaving his wife, Barbara, and children Judith and Barbara. His first wife, Barbara Scott, predeceased him. The Jacobsons had a winter home in Key West, Florida, and a home in the Adirondacks for summers. In between they lived in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and in 2002 moved to Faulkways in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania. At Dartmouth Sol was active in the Outing Club, The Dartmouth and with the Dartmouth Players. His interest in theater was long-lived, with acting early on and then work as a very successful press agent for more than 200 Broadway productions and road tours. “Every press agent has one big hit in his career and mine was Fiddler on the Roof,” Sol said. Not only did he promote what became the longest running play on Broadway, he was also press agent for its road shows on the West Coast and abroad from South Africa to Norway. Although Sol became a noted press agent in New York and a consultant to many of the top producers and directors, he most enjoyed publicizing the shows beyond Broadway. He served on Quaker committees and attended Religious Society of Friends world conferences in Sweden and Switzerland. He was also a reader for the blind and a literacy teacher.
