Rowland Barnes French ’41

Rowland Barnes French ’41, M.D., passed away July 31 at Calais (Maine) Hospital. He was the son of Dr. Harry and Florence (Austin) French. He was the 18th Rowland Barnes French, a name passed by tradition from uncle to nephew. He graduated from Dartmouth and Harvard Medical School, class of 1943. In WW II he served as a Navy lieutenant attached to the Marine Corps and was wounded in the land invasion of Iwo Jima. He did his surgical residency at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston and taught surgery in the tumor clinic at the University of Wisconsin. He moved to Eastport, Maine, with his young family and served as a physician there for 37 years. His wife, Winifred (in 1995), and sister Elizabeth predeceased him. Survivors include his brother Arthur and five children.
