Robert Leonard Allen ’45

Robert Leonard Allen ’45 died September 15, 2011, in Hanover after a long illness. He came to Dartmouth from Bulkeley High in Hartford, Connecticut. In February 1943 he volunteered into the 10th Mountain Division, training at Camp Hale in Colorado and then Italy, where he was wounded. In 1944, on one of his furloughs, he married Carol Brumond of Tarrytown, New York. They returned to Dartmouth in 1945 and he completed his undergraduate studies, then worked at Dartmouth, where he became assistant secretary of the College. In 1958 Bob and Carol moved with their three children, all born in Hanover, to Lincoln, Massachusetts, where Bob joined the Kendall Co. in Boston as director of public relations. His years from 1974 to 1987, as executive director of the Henry P. Kendall Foundation, were the most rewarding of his professional life. During his career the foundation supported energy conservation, land use, wilderness protection and arms control. He retired to Castine, Maine, in 1990, and then in 2005 joined the Kendal retirement community in Hanover. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carol, children Susan, Martha and Mark and five grandchildren.
