Robert Hurd Nutt ’49
Robert Hurd Nutt ’49 died at home on December 19, 2010, in Norwich, Vermont, from lung cancer. Educated at the Pingry School in New Jersey and at Dartmouth, Nutt enjoyed a writing career that included advertising agencies, publishing firms and books. He was one of 12 members of the Nutt family to graduate from Dartmouth over a span of 130 years. At Dartmouth he acted, stage-managed and designed sets for the Dartmouth Players. During and immediately after his college years he spent four summers in theatrical stock companies, primarily at the Bucks County (Pennsylvania) Playhouse. Becoming a member of Actors Equity, he worked with many showbiz names, from Thornton Wilder to Grace Kelly. Moving to the advertising business, for almost two decades Nutt was an account supervisor responsible for the domestic and international advertising of J.P. Morgan. Other accounts he handled ranged from the New York Herald Tribune to Fortune magazine. In 1987 he relocated to Thetford, Vermont, and became an editor at Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Twenty years later he retired as a contributing editor. In 2010 Shires Press published Nutt’s food memoir, Great Meals. His 10-minute play, The Full Treatment, will be produced by Parish Players in Thetford; opening night is February 11, which would have been his 83rd birthday. When not writing, Nutt spent as much time as possible on the golf course. Nutt is survived by his wife of 32 years, Margo; his first wife, Laura; their daughters Sarah ’80, Susan ’81 and Martha; granddaughters Laura and Carrie; and siblings David ’44 and Mary.
