Robert Bramley Barker ’60

Robert Bramley Barker ’60 died on April 30, 2012, in Houston, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, and their three children. Although his relationship with the College was limited following his graduation in 1960, both Robert and his wife, an attorney by training, had distinguished careers in government service—he in the Defense Department and she in the field of arms control. At Dartmouth Robert majored in physics and was involved in the Dartmouth Christian Union. Following Dartmouth he earned his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1966. In 1985 Robert served as assistant to the secretary of defense for atomic energy at the Department of Defense. Prior to this he had been deputy assistant director of the Bureau of Verification and Intelligence at the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. He also worked at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory as an assistant director for arms control from 1982 to 1983 and as a special projects division leader from 1978 to 1982. Clearly Robert deployed his gifts and his Dartmouth education to the service of his country and humanity. He is a classmate, who though perhaps not well known to many of us during his days at Dartmouth, embarked on a distinguished career that commands the admiration of the College and his classmates.
