Richard Bruce Dalbeck ’52


Richard Bruce Dalbeck ’52 died on December 20, 2011. He was a longtime resident of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, but he had recently moved into an assisted living facility in Falmouth, Maine. He was born on May 17, 1929, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts, graduating from the Belmont Hill School. He graduated magna cum laude and a member of Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth and received an M.B.A. with distinction from the Tuck School in 1953. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta and a varsity letterman in crew. Following college he served as a supply officer in the U.S. Navy. Dick then began a long and successful career in business, including time with General Electric, A.T. Kearney Management Consulting and what is now Unum, a major insurance company. In 1969 Dick joined Unionmutual Insurance as vice president of corporate marketing and planning. He retired from Unum in 1991 as an executive vice president and a director. Dick was also active in community and state public service affairs, including the Portland, Maine, chamber of commerce, United Way, his church, Maine Health Care Finance Commission and numerous others. While in the Navy, in 1956, he met and married Shirley Wells. She survives him along with their children Barbara, Betsey and Bruce and three grandchildren.
