Peter Mengel Ambrose ’62

Peter Mengel Ambrose ’62, M.D., of Bellingham, Washington, passed away on June 21, 2010. Pete came to Dartmouth from Lakeside High School in Seattle, Washington, where he participated in football and track, and was president of his senior class. An economics major at Dartmouth, Pete played football his freshman year, rugby for three years and was an active member of Psi Upsilon and NROTC. Following graduation Pete served on a destroyer in the Pacific. In 1964 he entered the graduate school of business at the University of Washington and received an M.B.A. He subsequently entered the university’s medical school and received an M.D. four years later. After residency training in Texas and working in Los Angeles, he and his wife returned to the Northwest in 1974 and settled in Bellingham, where he practiced emergency medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital for approximately 20 years, eventually serving as head of emergency physicians. After he retired Pete continued his practice at the successful Whatcom Occupational Health Clinic, which he had started. Pete is fondly remembered as a man of humility and humor who loved his family and friends and who enjoyed sailing, skiing, playing golf and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Pat, their daughters Kari and Heidi and five grandchildren.
