Malcolm Bruce Davidson ’57

Malcolm Bruce Davidson ’57 of Barrington, Rhode Island, passed away on July 11 after a short battle with cancer. Mal came to Dartmouth from San Luis Obispo, California. He majored in history, was a member of Phi Kappa Psi (where he was pledge master, house manager and chaplain) and participated in golf, The Players (light chief, directorate member) and the Glee Club. Mal served in the Marines from 1958 to 1962 and worked in primary metals sales for most of his career. He was a member of the Barrington and Tiverton, Rhode Island, yacht clubs and the Warren-Barrington Rotary Club, serving as president. Mal is survived by his wife Judy; children Bruce ’81, Andrew, Scott and Anne; two grandchildren; and a brother. Fraternity brother Bob Copeland ’57 wrote: “Mal was definitely a character. He was a good tennis player and not bad at pool. He even tried hockey for the house. He had a black VW beetle and, similar to others at the time, we put it up on the porch of the house one day. Boy was he annoyed. He made a great milk punch for Sunday mornings and directed both our house play and hums his senior year.” Paul Hagedorn ’57 added: “Have a lot of good memories of Mal. At Storyville [Club in Boston] we heard some of the greats together—Sarah Vaughn, Duke Ellington, Errol Gardner, Chris Connors.” Bill Edgerton ’57 wrote: “I never remember seeing Mal without a smile. What a nice guy and funny guy he was.”
