Lee Sargent McGonagle ’36

Lee Sargent McGonagle ’36 passed away November 24, 2009, in Edmonds, Washington. He came to Dartmouth from his hometown high school in Duluth, Minnesota, and graduated in 1936 with an A.B. in economics. In 1938 he and Elizabeth Huey were married in Duluth. He worked for Minnesota Power and Light Co. before moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1941. He worked in the insurance industry as claims manager of Rainier National Insurance Co. and Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Co. and later in sales as an independent adjuster/agent owning and operating his own company, West Coast Claims Service, in the Seattle, Washington, area. During the 1950s Lee was president of the Seattle Claims Adjusters Association. He was an active long-time member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, chaired the building committee during the 1950s and was an usher for many years. Lee’s father, Joseph S. McGonagle, class of 1911, an uncle and a cousin also attended Dartmouth. Lee was active in Dartmouth alumni affairs throughout his life: He was president of the Western Washington Alumni Club during the 1950s, class agent (1962-68 and 1987-06), and involved in the National Research Development Program (1989-90) in addition to activities in his local alumni organization. He is survived by children Lee Anne and William, granddaughter Elizabeth, stepson Darwin, five step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces, a nephew and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Mary Frances, and Elizabeth, the mother of his children.
