James William Jacobson ’64
James William Jacobson ’64, Ph.D., a longtime resident of the Washington, D.C., area, passed away on December 23, 2009, of complications from leukemia. Jim came from Swan Valley, Idaho, to Dartmouth, already an accomplished skier. He was a valued and respected captain of the Dartmouth ski team, who competed in all four events—downhill, slalom, cross country and jumping—and was honored as All-American in 1962. He was a member of Gamma Delta Chi and Casque & Gauntlet. He received a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Utah. Subsequently he was a postdoctoral fellow at Yale, then joined the genetics research faculty at the University of Georgia. In 1980 he joined Genex Corp., where he worked for 12 years as a research scientist, receiving a number of patents. Finally he joined the National Cancer Institute, where he became chief of the diagnostic biomarkers and technology branch. Testament to his modesty was that Jim’s family learned he was an All-American skier only at a Dartmouth dinner many years after the award. He was active in his church, having served on the board of trustees of the Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church (Bethesda, Maryland). From his marriage to Ann Kelley he leaves children J. Bryan ’93 and Daneille. He also leaves his wife, Judith, and their daughter Erika and four grandchildren. For further details, go to www.alum.dartmouth.org/classes/64/Obits/Jacobson-obit-2009.html.
