James Oliver Corner ’39

James Oliver Corner ’39 died November 15, 2010, at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin, Delaware. Jim graduated from Dartmouth summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, having majored in chemistry. In 1942 he earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois. Shortly thereafter he moved to Wilmington, Delaware, to start a 40-year career with DuPont. Most of his time was spent in the textile fibers division, including several years as laboratory director of DuPont’s Dacron plant in Kinston, North Carolina. Jim retired in 1982. With a group of other young couples, Jim was a founding member of Horseshoe Hill, a small development in Hockessin, just west of Wilmington, where he and Doris (whom Jim had married in January 1945) lived and raised their family from 1950 until 2002. He loved golf, tennis, hiking and enjoyed helping neighbors and others. He served Wilmington’s Westminster Presbyterian Church as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and faithful greeter. Jim Corner was one of the most beloved members of our class. Because of his gregarious nature and always friendly disposition, he became well-acquainted with more classmates than probably any other 1939er. He served the College and our class faithfully and well as head agent for the Dartmouth College Fund from 1976 to 2008. Jim is survived by Doris, children Roger, Donald ’70 and Carol, sister Helen Trageser, two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. His sister Clare and brother Malcolm ’44 predeceased him.
