Gary Loomis Blaich ’68

Gary Loomis Blaich ’68, M.D., died at home in Kilauea, Hawaii, of cancer on November 25, 2010. Born and raised in Hawaii, at Dartmouth Gary was a brother at Sigma Alpha Epsilon and a member of Casque & Gauntlet and Green Key. He played football during his early years at the College and later was a member of the rugby club for three years. Gary attended Dartmouth Medical School for two years and completed his M.D. at the University of Washington. His residency in psychiatry was at the University of Washington affiliated hospitals. Upon completing his training Gary moved back to Hawaii, where he worked at Hawaii State Hospital, was an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, and maintained a private practice on Kauai for more than 30 years. As president of the Kauai Public Land Trust he helped lead efforts that resulted in the conservation of more than 175 acres of coastal lands. He was also supportive of the Kauai Independent Food Bank and the Honolulu Art Academy. A medical school classmate recalled Gary as “a man of great warmth and compassion, the ideal physician for a person in emotional distress.” Gary is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beryl, daughters Mehana and Meleana, two grandchildren and many extended family members.
